Mental Health

Youth may turn to nicotine to cope with mental health challenges, but vaping can actually intensify stress, anxiety, and depression.

Mental Health and Vaping

Mental health plays a significant role in youth vaping and tobacco use. Many young people turn to nicotine products as a way to cope with stress, anxiety, or depression. However, research shows that nicotine can actually worsen these symptoms, creating a dangerous cycle. As young people attempt to self-medicate with nicotine, they may develop stronger cravings, experience withdrawal effects, and become dependent, further affecting their mental health.

Help-Seeking Among Youth and Stigma Reduction

Young people often face barriers to seeking help for mental health and substance use issues, including stigma, fear of judgment, and concerns about confidentiality. Many also struggle to recognize the severity of their problems or lack access to supportive resources.

Schools and staff can help by:

  • Normalizing conversations about mental health, tobacco, and substance use
  • Providing education and support that empowers students to make informed decisions and seek help when needed
  • Offering easily accessible counseling or peer support services
  • Training staff to recognize warning signs and respond with empathy
  • Creating policies and practices that protect student privacy and build trust

By shifting from punitive approaches to supportive interventions, educators and administrators can create an environment where youth feel safe asking for help.
